I agree that the elite will always influence public opinion. Even though there is a much greater range of voices on the internet, at the same time there has been a huge concentration of the mass media in just a few hands, so the mere existence of the internet is not going to solve the problem. We're only going to have a robust debate when we adopt a cultural value that having one is important -- paradoxically, though, that value can only be popularized by the elite.

Luckily, we will become the media elite, so it's up to us!

Sending this comment late because of my silliness at forgetting to make enough comments in September. Have a nice second semester, Peter C

Yeah, but what about Mr Funt or whatever his name was who killed Lehman Brothers? What about Bill Gates? WHat about Sumner Redstone? Are they a mass share-owning representation of all of us, and are they large enough to be the public? Sumner Redstone may be shaped like a sphere. I sure hope he doesn;t become a PUBLIC sphere!!! Go to hell!!!

You're right when you say that there's no need for actual control when psychology can do the same job. In this, our country often reminds me of the USSR. Remember the USSR? That's where they had a newspaper called "Truth," and everyone believed it was true because they had never seen the truth. And, they had "free elections" wit only one candidate and 99% of the people voted yes. They thought they had elections because they had never seen one.

And really, that's how we are now, isn't it? The question is what the future holds. AND ONLY VANQUISHING POSTMODERNISM WILL SAVE US!! WOOOT!!!!

Have a good one. I am writing this comment late because for some reason I mysteriously forgot to write my second comment on 10/14. Silly me. Have fun, see you soon, Peter C

I didn't have time to write this comment on election day because I had to travel a long way to vote. However, it's interesting that this was the day we were discussing cybernetic systems, because it was the one single day I can remember where we all did something distinctly human; and it wasn't the voting, but it was the way everyone felt when we went out in the street afterward. I hope what we did on that day matters.

So here's to you with my makeup comment. Have a nice second semester, Peter C

That Cummings not only can't add, he also can't count. Obviously Wiener didn't write about Cummings in 1948, since Cummings was not born yet. Do you need to tell us that? Of course, we might get both of these guys confused and intertwangles or whatever since their names are so similar -- Cummings -- Wiener -- Cummings -- Wiener -- give me a break. These names are as fake as a 69-dollar bill. Personally, one of the great advantages of cybernetics might be that I could control these two to the degree that I could force their names to change. Hey that would probably turn them both on, so don't accuse me of misunderstanding masochism. Go to hell!

As you might suspect, I agree with Christina. I totally agree that when there's too much hypermediacy, it often creates so much noise that it adversely affects our ability to address immediacy.

I couldn't write any comments for the week you wrote this because nobody else commented until moments before class, so I have to do it now. It's a classic example of how hypermediacy sucks compared to immediacy! I hope our friend Mr Asaro will remember not to grade me down for this lateness, since I had no choice but to do this late.

Ah, the joy of make-up blog posts! Have a nice second semester, Peter C

I'm really glad that you stood up for authenticity. Of course, I don't know who you are because this was written anonymously. Interesting in this context, isn't it? I also considered the question of whether I want all my posts here to be able to be quoted back at me forever. I'm working on the answer.

Yeah sure, and if you call yourself the guardian of high culture -- a fact i severely doubt -- then how can you call for great art like Rembrandt to be all mixed up with some trash like Paris Hilton ads for John S.P.Q.R. McCain? And, what are they going to do with Harvard and Yale when there's no difference between them and the University of Southern North Podunk at Hicksville?

Plus, also, Shakespeare will NEVER be as hot as Justin, give me a break. Look at the first three letters of your last name to see the dif. Go to hell!

I love "Pecker" too, speaking as a photographer myself. Even though it seems to say that nothing has value, or that anything has value, that is always too easy an interpretation of John Waters. Waters always knows that kitsch tells the truest story. And you know what's funniest is that "Pecker," while it seems to make a comment on low and high art, is in itself a form of high art ("independent film") so it looks like Waters had the last laugh.
